STORY

A personal trip to England leads to photo sessions with T-REX and David Bowie!
Sukita made his way to England on his own with a desire to photograph T-REX, and surprisingly gained a photo session after showing his portfolio around. Meanwhile, he was intrigued by a poster he saw of an up-and-coming musician named David Bowie and offered to photograph him as well. That marked the start of a long and illustrious global career for Sukita.

The one man David Bowie allowed into his private life with a camera.
David Bowie’s fascination with Japan led to a private trip to Kyoto documented by Sukita and culminating in a famous photo session. Their relationship evolve into a lifelong friendship.

The only photo book of movie stills from a Jim Jarmusch movie
When film director, Jim Jarmusch, asked Sukita to do the publicity stills for his movie, Mystery Train, he had the actors redo each scene after shooting to give Sukita free reign in his photography, resulting in such beautiful work that Jarmusch published a a photoessay of stills from the movie. It was the only film of his for which he ever did this, citing “I don’t think this can ever be topped.”

A Sukita photo launches the career of HOTEI (Kill Bill main theme writer)
Tomoyasu Hotei says he first took up the guitar after being inspired by Sukita’s famous photo of Marc Bolan of T-REX hanging in a music shop. From there, Hotei would go on to become a world-class guitarist guest jamming with the Rolling Stones and writing the main theme for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
