This original film is inspired by a real incident in which a group of housewives were arrested for gold smuggling at Chubu Centrair International Airport in 2017.
The film is directed by Chihiro Amano, one of the most promising filmmakers working in Japan today. After gaining wide recognition for Mrs. Noisy, which won the Japan Movie Critics Award, and directing acclaimed works such as Sato-san and Sato-san, Amano takes on her most ambitious project to date. Shooting extensively on location in Singapore, she brings to the screen a dazzling, almost magical journey surrounding a gold-smuggling operation, captured with the atmosphere of the city itself.
The film also boasts an outstanding cast. Kasumi Arimura stars in her first role as a mother, joined by Haru Kuroki and Sara Minami, who play two women she encounters in Singapore and becomes partners with in the smuggling scheme.
Supporting roles are filled by Akihisa Shiono, Takumi Saito, and Hayato Kurihara of Happy End, completing a high-caliber suspense entertainment film.
STORY
The story of a “revenge game” for the weak, a gold-smuggling case based upon a true story involving people who are generally seen as the weakest members of society.
Wakako is a housewife living a quiet life with her husband Takashi and their two children. When Takashi collapses from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, she learns he has lost his job and fallen into gambling debt. With no financial support, Wakako accepts a suspicious job offer and travels to Singapore with her children. There, she is recruited into a gold smuggling operation.
Though frightened, Wakako goes through with the job alongside two other women driven by hardship: Kiyoe, a postdoctoral researcher obsessed with K-pop, and Mayu, a pregnant single mother working at a hostess club. Exploiting lax security checks on women with children or injuries, the trio successfully carries out the smuggling. Not long after their first job, the trio returns to Singapore to smuggle gold on their own for more money.
