This film takes its inspiration from a celebrated manga by the prodigious Inio Asano, who enjoys a diverse following especially among readers in their teens, twenties, and thirties. He has continued to explore new possibilities in manga, producing works such as the currently serialized “Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction” and “Goodnight Punpun,” not to mention “Solanin,” which was developed into a smash hit movie.
The original manga “A Girl on the Shore” has already become hugely popular in Europe, and translations have been published in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Russia, the United States, and Taiwan. Over 10,000 copies have been sold in France and Italy, as well as more than 30,000 in the United States. Additionally, in 2020, Asano was invited to participate in Europe’s largest comics festival, known as the Cannes of comics, the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France.
STORY
Koume, an ordinary junior high school girl living in a small seaside town, is devastated after being given the cold shoulder by an older student she was crazy about. In an attempt to get over him, she begins a physical relationship with Isobe, an introverted classmate who once confessed his feelings for her.
When they first have sex, it’s a new experience for both of them, and nothing like what they imagined it would be. Only an extremely simple act, with no attraction or love involved. From then on, they continue meeting in secret, making sure no one else finds out about it.
However, the more they become physically intimate, the more Koume becomes dependent on the presence of Isobe, who she never even contemplated falling in love with. Meanwhile, Isobe gradually becomes consumed by his feelings and sexual desire for Koume, as well as his resentment over the death of his older brother which he had tried to keep suppressed, until now...
