PRODUCTION NOTES

‘Detroit Metal City’ Director Toshio Lee & an all-star cast!
Taken from a true story, an entertainment to bring good luck!
A script based on Aniki’s real-life Lessons for Success! A cheerful, funny, good-luck entertainment based on an unbelievable true story!

‘You lack cool. And you have that “poor me” look on your face.’ ‘You can’t buy trust.’ ‘Happiness creates a virtuous cycle’. ‘Money isn’t all that makes you rich. When you think about someone else’s happiness, then you’re richer.’

The people of Bali believe that gods inhabit every street corner. They leave floral offerings for them, and naturally pray to them as they go about their everyday lives. The people of Bali are good at being grateful. There Aniki mixes humor with his ‘teachings’ on how to prosper, and happily spreads his wealth around. While Aniki is financially very successful, it is most important to him that he be ‘rich in life’.

STORY

Shoko, a failed businesswoman. Now she’s joining Aniki’s gang. ‘When you fail, laugh!’ ‘Laugh your way to success’ - Aniki
Her wedding company having gone broke in Tokyo, Shoko (Machiko Ono) comes to Bali, determined to end her life. There she encounters Aniki (Shinichi Tsutsumi), an eccentric millionaire who she first believes is an expatriate Japanese gangster. He is in fact a middle-school dropout, a former biker, who has become rich in Bali real estate. She decides to learn from him how to become rich, and he sets her to work cleaning toilets and various other jobs. In disgust she quits, but then learns about his charitable activities from Ryu (Hiroshi Tamaki), who left a promising career as an eye doctor in Japan to work for Aniki. Meanwhile a stalker, Sugita (Naoto Inti Raymi), tracks Shoko down, determined that she is going to marry him. Aniki has plans to build an ‘Anikindergarten’ for the children of the island. But problems arise, and the project stalls. Aniki, whose motto is ‘When you fail, laugh’, finds even his faith in himself now being shaken...
