Satoru Hirohara, a rising filmmaker, say Bong Joon-ho and Jia Zhangke
For his directorial debut film, “Good Morning to the World!” (’09), Japanese film auteur, Satoru Hirohara, took home grand prize at the Dragons and Tigers Award for Young Cinema Award at the 29th Vancouver International film Festival in 2009, earning the praises of such luminary directors as Bong Joon-ho and Jia Zhangke. His debut film had successive global screenings including at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.

Powerful ensemble of Japan’s best young actors
Hirohara’s new film features the powerful acting of Taiga (“Harmonium” ’16, “Japanese Girls Never Die” ’16), a fast rising star who heads an ensemble of bright young Japanese actors poised to bear the future of Japanese cinema, including Aoi Nakamura (“Tokyo Refugees” ’14), Yuma Yamoto (“Chiyahayafuru”, ’16), Shota Sometani (“Himizu”, ’11, “Parasyte”, ‘16), , Aimi Satsukawa (“Himeanole”, ’16) and Junko Abe (Naomi Kawase ’s “Still the Water”, ’14 by). The original story was written by Kazumasa Hayami with Hirohara adapting it for film. Hayami also wrote “Our Family”, directed by Yuya Ishii in 2014.

Vancouver and Berlin accolades bring new director global attention

Born in Tokyo in 1986, Hirohara graduated from the Musashino Art University’s Department of Imaging Arts & Sciences, completing his film school education at the International University of Fine Arts and Music Graduate School of Film. His graduation film, “Good Morning to the World!” (’09) was awarded a special jury prize at the 2010 Pia Film Festival, turning the heads of such internationally respected directors as Bong Joon-ho and Jia Zhangke as it won the Dragons and Tigers Award for Young Cinema Award at the 29th Vancouver International film Festival in 2009, and was screened at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. In 2013, Hirohara made his national release debut with the Pia Film Festival Scholarship-backed film, “Homesick”, and is viewed as one of Japan’s most promising directors.

STORY

”We’re wasting our youth! We need the miraculous!”
Three high school males embark upon the road trip of their young lives!

Three bored high school boys, Matahachi, Jin and Jumbo, plot to hijack their graduation ceremony and turn it into a live music event. But they abandon the plan and instead decide to close out their teens with a last hurrah, road trip in search of adventure to change their bleak outlook on the future. Appropriating Jumbo’s father’s car, they take to the road picking up quirky travel mates along the way, including a prostitute and a bikini model, and soon find themselves slowly maturing while steered by fate toward the discovery of personal purpose. It is a youthful road movie that summons you to grab life by the reins and make a change.
