PRODUCTION NOTES

A brilliant female director, whose debut feature was selected at the Cannes Film Festival, adapts the novel that won the Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Newcomer Award!
The film is based on the novel that won the 42nd Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Newcomer Award in 2021. This powerful youth fiction tells the story of young people struggling with exploitation, sexual abuse, and control by their parents as they attempt to escape and survive.
The eagerly awaited film adaptation is directed by Aya Igashi, a rising female director whose debut feature "Tokeru" (2016) was selected for the Cinéfondation section at the Cannes Film Festival, making her the youngest Japanese director to be chosen for that honor. Her subsequent work "A Crimson Star” (2018) was also selected for the Raindance Film Festival, and she has garnered recognition both in Japan and internationally.
The film stars popular young actors: Sara Minami from "The Good Father" (2022) and Fumika Baba from "Love is Light" (2022). It vividly portrays the realities of youth living in the 2020s, a powerful coming-of-age story.

STORY

"I love you"—Is that phrase a magic that forgives everything, or a curse? Women trapped by distorted love from their parents now break free from their past.
Hiiro Miyata, a university student, works part-time at a convenience store and an aquarium, juggling multiple jobs to pay for her tuition and support her household, taking care of the household chores that her spendthrift mother neglects. Hiiro has no goal in life and no friends, and she lives her days clinging only to the words "I love you" from her mother as her emotional support.
One day, Hiiro hears a rumor that her coworker and classmate, Miyabi Enaga, is the daughter of a murderer. Miyabi reveals her traumatic past, detailing the sexual violence inflicted by her father and the forced prostitution imposed by her mother.
Despite her more desperate circumstances, Miyabi lives strongly, and through their conversations, Hiiro’s hopeless life begins to change little by little. Realizing her own exploitation by her mother, Hiiro eventually decides to leave home and start a new life with Miyabi.
Meanwhile, Hiiro is asked by her classmate Aqua, who has fallen into a new religious cult as an escape from her mother's overbearing control, to meet her mother. Hiiro then accompanies Miyabi to meet the cult leader, who has entangled Aqua in her teachings. This is a coming-of-age film about young people who live in dependence on their own misfortune, as they break free from their past and take their first steps toward a new future.
