PRODUCTION NOTES

Takuya Uchiyama, who swept the New Talent Awards with “Sasaki in My Mind”, presents a semi-autobiographical story confronting the death of his mother
Director Uchiyama faced his mother’s terminal diagnosis at 15 and decided at 20 to honor her memory through creative expression. After her passing at 21, he left his career as a fashion stylist to pursue filmmaking, crafting a script inspired by his personal experiences. This semi-autobiographical story is set in his hometown of Niigata and is shot entirely on 16mm film, capturing the stark urban landscapes of Japan from 1998 to 2017 with a documentary-like touch.

STORY

Winter, 2003, Niigata. Eleven-year-old Daichi has lost his voice due to the trauma of his father’s violence and lives in poverty with his mother, Aki, in a prefab house. In 2007, Aki, suffering from an illness brought on by years of alcoholism, moves with Daichi to her sister’s home, a devout follower of a new religious sect. Aki endures daily violence and extortion from her lover, while the powerless Daichi can do nothing but watch. By 2017, Daichi has found success in the underworld. One day, he receives a letter from his mother, now living in a rehabilitation facility. Returning to his hometown, Daichi learns of his estranged father’s current circumstances and, with conflicted emotions, sets out to face him.
