Tremble All You Want 勝手にふるえてろ
PRODUCTION NOTES
From a story by the Akutagawa Prize-winning author Risa Wataya
An explosive romantic comedy of wild ideas comes to the screen Mayu Matsuoka, a rising young star, in her first lead role
The original story is a novel by Risa Wataya, whose novella ‘I Want to Kick You in the Back won the 2003 Akutagawa Prize, Japan’s most prominent literary award. Tremble All You Want continues her tradition of realistic, sharp-tongued women narrators.
Directing is Akiko Ohku, who in films such as Tokyo Serendipity casts a sympathetic eye on the lives of women in the present day. Mayu Matsuoka in the lead role of Yoshika is one of Japan’s busiest young actresses, active in both television and film. Her first starring role is notable for her deft comic touch.
In the role of ‘Two’, her ‘real’ boyfriend, is Daichi Watanabe, singer in the rock back Kuroneko Chelsea, and also an actor and film director. As her mostly imaginary boyfriend ‘One’ is Takumi Kitamura, a popular young actor first known as a child performer, and who also sings, plays guitar, and dances with the pop band DISH//.
Supporting them is a talented cast of well-established and distinctive character actors, including Anna Ishibashi, Kanji Furutachi, and Hairi Katagiri.
STORY
Yoshika, a 24 year-old office clerk, is in her tenth year of unrequited love for Ichimiya (‘Ichi’, or ‘One’), a fellow student in middle school. Now ‘Two’, a persistent fellow worker, asks her out. As no one has ever done this before, she is pleased, but their relationship does not seem to catch fire. This cannot be said for the futon in her apartment, which bursts into flame from contact with an electric heater. The fire is extinguished, but her brush with death makes her determined to see the Ichi again, and she sets to work organizing a reunion of classmates who by and large don’t remember her at all.
Obsessed with her imaginary ‘One’, and timid with regard to the real ‘Two’, Yoshika struggles to find herself, torn between fantasy and reality, and between what she really wants and what she really doesn’t.
Vivacious in her own mind, drab to the outside world, Yoshika is the heroine of a true romantic comedy for the present day.
